Hazel was born in the UK, and reared in Africa, where she
learned classical guitar study at the East African Conservatory of Music. After
returning to England, in college, she developed an interest in folk music. Hazel
has been is the United States since 1971. She is an accomplished musician, and
the widow of Courtney Johnson, one the greatest banjo players of modern days,
and original member of the phenomenal iconic band, "New Grass Revival,"
with whom he played from 1972 to 1981. The band has had some memorable hits, and
from their unique style of blue grass blended with rock and blues, the term
"newgrass" was coined as a generic term by the music industry for
this genre, according to an article published by Country Music Television.
Hazel was, during this time, set-up manager and the payer for the band. She is
friends with a number of celebrities, and still active in music, both country
and Scottish.
Coming in 2011:
Roots of Newgrass
Book Synopsis:
A book is beginning to take shape to be released in mid to late 2011, revolving around
Hazel’s colorful life, her association with the music industry, and her years with New Grass
Revival. Though a title has not yet been agreed upon, I shall refer to it here as Roots of
Newgrass. It will reveal heretofore unpublished accounts of her working relationships with
such notable singer/song writers as Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, Leon Russell and close
friend, John Hartford (Gentle on my Mind) of the "Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour" TV Show.
This book promises to be a national bestseller. A must read for Country Pop and Bluegrass
fans. Numerous photos.
